Yorkshire-based artist and Swinton Foundation Award winner at New Lights 2013 Christopher Hall is to unveil a new piece of work painted especially for the historic Swinton Park country estate in Masham. Christopher was the first artist to win the prestigious Swinton Foundation Award at the New Lights Art Prize for artists under 35, which took place at the Mercer Gallery, Harrogate in 2013 . Chris’ work was selected by judges for the prize from 50 pieces in the exhibition and after winning the prize – which included a weekend stay at the luxury Swinton Park hotel, he was asked to produce a new piece of work inspired by Yorkshire locations for the permanent collection at Swinton.

Christopher Hall’s work is known for its subtle use of colour and artistic treatment of contemporary subjects. The painting he has produced for Swinton Park is inspired by the house and gardens of the nearby Harewood House located in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The finished painting entitled, “In einer Zauberstunde (One Enchanted Hour)” will hang in the Harewood Suite, one of 31 individually themed rooms at Swinton named after prominent Yorkshire locations. Chris said:

“It was a real honour to have my work on display at the Mercer Gallery, and winning the Swinton Foundation Award at New Lights was fantastic. I was invited to mount an exhibition of my work at Swinton in 2014 and paint a picture for the Swinton Collection based on the name of the room in which I stayed. Harewood seemed appropriate as I live and work in Leeds and it is a place I have visited many times (…) For this painting I have taken inspiration from many sources including the impressive gardens and sculptures at Harewood House, The Magic Flute and the techniques employed by Gustav Klimt in his late, lesser-known landcape works (…) I have enjoyed the challenge of this painting and have tried to do something a little different from my usual work but something that is still recognisable as me.”

Proprietor, patron and founder of the Swinton Foundation Felicity Cunliffe-Lister said:

“The Swinton Foundation Prize was an initiative designed to help emerging Northern artists establish themselves, and I am delighted that Chris is our first winner. His picture will give great pleasure to our guests in years to come.”

Since winning the prestigious award Chris has been busy working on new paintings for an exhibition in 2015.

To celebrate the Swinton Prize he has produced a series of unique, numbered limited edition Harewood prints which are available to buy directly from the artist’s website christopherhallart.co.uk or by clicking on the link here.

The Swinton Foundation Prize The Swinton prize, sponsored by Swinton Park Hotel, is inspired by La Colombe d’Or in France, which has a long history of supporting art and artists. Some reports say that many famous artists passed through the doors before they attained popularity, artists including Miro, Matisse, Chagall and others, often settling their bills by leaving a painting for the hotel owners.
