Christopher Hall examines the interplay between memory, ritual and notions of power.

Celebrating the materiality of physical film, he creates montage-like collages, pushing images through alchemical processes to generate images that cannot be achieved digitally.

Manipulated frames become striking, loaded images; what previously existed on the edge of consciousness is now excavated from the film strip and presented for our extended contemplation. Recurring images of ceremonies, marching bands and military parades take on new meaning, posing questions around how we remember, how we memorialise and what, in our digital world, will survive.

Janey Walklin

Her artwork involves the idea of making imprints and pictorial montages from the ephemeral matter of experience.

In these works on canvas, mark making is derived from both ordinary objects and the paint media itself to create emotional landscapes. The images record memories, place, identity and perhaps overlooked connections which co-exist in the process of painting as a visual response.

A Leeds-based artist-print maker, studied at Beckenham Art School, University of Leeds, Leeds College of Art.

Leeds Revisited Exhibition

in association with the Dortmunder Gruppe & East Street Arts@BIG Gallery, Dortmund

(German translation) Closely connected to the founding story of the Dortmunder Gruppe in the 1950’s this artists’ group does not only care for the affairs and development of its members, but also besides that has always made international connections. The Dortmunder Gruppe has been cultivating a lively exchange with ‘East Street Arts’ since 1999, so that besides connections as colleagues also friendships could develop…

…Not family history, but a historic awareness in general is behind the works of Christopher Hall. On the one hand there are buildings and places in our present that talk of times past like frozen witnesses. On the other hand every life is the stringing together of fleeting moments. In The Frozen Borderline the bugging station at the Berliner Teufelsberg provides the subject. Having been closed down and become useless after the cold war, it can be reinterpreted artistically. Awakening at Left Bank Leeds

Exhibiton open Friday 12th October – Friday 16th November 2012

Awakening Exhibition Poster

Awakening is a group show curated by Northern Young Artists with their first open exhibition. The month long exhibition launches on Friday 12th October at the new exhibition centre, Left Bank Leeds (former St Margaret of Antioch Church).

Christopher Hall is one of the exhibiting artists:

‘In times of austerity and government spending cuts, the arts are historically first on the chopping block. Limited and conditional state support is quickly withdrawn as subsidies are slashed and organisations go to the wall – as though artistic endeavour and expression were merely a luxury and one that we can do without when times are hard – desirable but not essential. Meanwhile the really important business goes on – dishing out public money to corporations and banks; funding strategic foreign wars; and privatising public services, schools and hospitals.

A more optimistic view might note artists’ responses to this change in government priorities. Art has always been, through patronage and ownership, the preserve of the rich, that said the new ‘austerity’ environment just may have fermented the conditions necessary for a radical re-engagement – a veil has been lifted. Recent years have seen the re-emergence of a proliferation of independent groups and artist collectives; a return to a more DIY ethos springing, perhaps, from the realisation that nobody is going to do it for us.

My work for this exhibition responds in a deeply personal way to the rapid social and economic changes that are happening all around us; changes that will have far reaching consequences in ways that we don’t yet fully understand.’
